“Waarom zou jij een gratis exemplaar van het boek “Snel aan de slag met Ubuntu” moeten ontvangen?”, was de vraag van een kleine competitie die we een paar weken geleden draaiden. We hebben uiteindelijk twee winnaars kunnen aanwijzen, Paul Schoonhoven en Rutger Verhoeven. Paul wil niet meer zelf uitleggen hoe simpel Ubuntu is en het boek is dan een ijzersterke oplossing natuurlijk . Rutger wil een vriendin die ook helemaal aan Linux is. Nu heeft hij al een vriendin en met het boek hoopt hij van haar een echte Linuxchick te maken. Onze zegen heeft hij. De boeken zijn naar de prijswinnaars onderweg. Proficiat! Op de vraag: “Wat houdt jou tegen om 100% op Linux over te stappen?” krijg je een paar antwoorden. Je hebt gebruikers die al jaren hebben geïnvesteerd in de grafische tools uit de Adobe stal (waaronder Photoshop) en weinig zin of tijd hebben om opnieuw te beginnen met open source tools (zo die al aan de vereiste kwaliteit voldoen). Dan heb je gebruikers die met programma’s werken die simpelweg niet onder Linux beschikbaar zijn (Autocad bijvoorbeeld, maar ook branchespecifieke applicaties) en die je ook niet via een emulator draaiende kan krijgen. En dan zijn er de gamers die ‘s nachts niet kunnen slapen als hun favoriete spel in de schappen dreigt te komen . Zij vereisen meer dan 100% ondersteuning voor de hardware (niks geen brakke videodrivers hier), willen niet gaan uitvogelen hoe je het spel draaiende krijgt onder Wine of Crossover. Maar wil dat zeggen dat Ubuntu (en Linux) niet geschikt is als platform voor games?

Het artikel The State of Linux Gaming 2011 wil toch het tegenovergestelde beweren. De wereld van games onder Linux is de afgelopen jaren stevig gegroeid en heeft voor elk wel wat wils.

Gnome 2 vs new desktops
In Linux Mint 11 we made the decision to keep Gnome 2.32. The traditional Gnome desktop, although it’s not actively developed by the Gnome development team anymore, is still by far the most popular desktop within the Linux community. As other distributions adopted new desktops such as Unity and Gnome 3, many users felt alienated and consequently migrated to Linux Mint. We recorded a 40% increase in a single month and we’re now quickly catching up with Ubuntu for the number #1 spot within the Linux desktop market.

As much as we’d like to keep Gnome 2.32 a little while longer we need to look forward and embrace new technologies. This doesn’t mean we need to change the way people use their desktops, not at all, it means we need to try and do our best for people to feel at home again, but on top of a brand new base, a new layer of technology, one that is actively supported upstream and that can be maintained properly going forward.

Cannonical heeft een overeenkomst gesloten met Linux New Media. Deze uitgeverij geeft ondermeer de (Engelstalige) tijdschriften uit van Ubuntu User, Linux Magazine, Linux Pro Magazine en ADMIN Magazine.

Dankzij deze overeenkomst is het nu mogelijk om via Ubuntu Softwarecentrum deze tijdschriften te kopen. Je krijgt dan een digitale editie of PDF uitgave van deze tijdschriften. Er is echter nog enige onduidelijkheid over de te hanteren prijs. Er wordt in het persbericht gesproken over een prijs van $ 6,99 maar in de praktijk lijken die prijzen fors hoger te liggen.

The Ubuntu Software Center is an online store integrated with the Ubuntu Linux distribution that offers both free and proprietary software products. Digital editions of Ubuntu User, Linux Magazine, and ADMIN will be available through the Software Center for US$ 6.99.

According to Linux New Media Editor in Chief Joe Casad, “Our mission is to provide the Linux community with insightful, high-quality technical articles on Linux and Open Source technology. This partnership is a great fit because we love to provide answers and insights on how to use Linux, and this kind of information is so important to all Ubuntu Users. We’re very excited about reaching our audience through this innovative new channel.”Canonical also announced a partnership with the Pearson Technology Group to provide eBooks for the Ubuntu Software Center.

Overigens kan je ook via Ubuntu Softwarecentrum de (gratis) Full Circle magazine downloaden. Die uitgaves worden dan automatisch in je /opt/fullcircle/issues opgeslagen.

Het is bijna niet voor te stellen, maar het is pas vijf, zes weken geleden dat de column werd geschreven die uiteindelijk het startpunt bleek te zijn van een campagne om het gebruik van open standaarden en platformonafhankelijke toegang voor het onderwijs (en de publieke sector) verplicht te stellen. De afgelopen twee weken was het online wat stiller en dat roept dan gelijk vragen op of er nog wel wat gaande is. Het korte antwoord is: ja, er is heel wat gaande maar dat is meer op de achtergrond dan de voorgrond. Het werk op het achtergrond heeft gevolgen voor mijn andere activiteiten zoals voor de websites Beginnen met Ubuntu en Open Trends (vandaar ook een plaatsing op de andere sites).

Voor een deel is het wachten op de minister van Onderwijs. De Tweede Kamer heeft vragen gesteld naar aanleiding van de petitie en de open brief. De minister heeft zes weken de tijd, maar ik schat zo in dat niet op alle vragen in de beschikbare tijd antwoord kan/zal komen. Afhankelijk van de reactie van de minister kunnen we de rest van de campagne scherper vormgeven.

Vanavond aandacht geschonken aan het broertje van Digiplace: www.linuxweblogs.nl. De indeling is aangepast; er zijn andere kleurkeuzes gemaakt, de kolombreedte is terugebracht en anders ingedeeld en er is een grafische header geplaatst. Binnenkort gaat ook Linuxweblogs verhuizen naar een andere server (bij een andere provider) waardoor de snelheid van Linuxweblogs dramatisch zal gaan toenemen. Dus vooruit..hou die content gewoon in de gaten. En zoals altijd: nieuwe aanmeldingen zijn welkom.

Update Pack 3 was released as the “latest” update pack today. If you’re not using Linux Mint Debian, please ignore this post.

In Update Pack 3, two drastic changes occur:

There’s a brand new kernel 3.0
The Security and Multimedia repositories are now part of the Update Pack itself.

As usual with updates, and especially with the new kernel, there’s some known problems and workarounds for you to enjoy which are documented in the Update Pack Info window of the Update Manager. The changes related to the Security and Multimedia repositories are documented there as well. I’m taking the opportunity to explain things a little more, here on the blog, and to let you comment and ask questions in case things aren’t 100% clear.
Changing your repositories

The first thing you need to do is to change your Multimedia and Security repositories. Edit your APT sources by typing the following command:

gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Within this file, replace the following:

Replace security.debian.org with debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security
Replace debian-multimedia.org with debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia

Your APT sources, should now look like this:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

Save and close the file.
Using the Update Manager … to update itself

The Update Manager always updates itself before other packages. If you see an update for “mintupdate-debian“, accept it and wait for the Update Manager to restart itself.

Nee, helaas, het gaat hier niet om het boek zoals dat op 20 september 2011 richting de boekhandels is gegaan, maar om vier subhoofdstukken die in de laatste fase op de snijtafel zijn gesneuveld. De tekst was volledig geredigeerd, maar het uiteindelijke boek kwam uit op 320 pagina’s. “Iets” meer dan de beoogde 254 pagina’s. De uitgever, SDU/Academic Service, wilde de aangekondigde prijs niet verhogen. De oplossing was het inkorten van het boek (tot 288 pagina’s) en het online plaatsen van de gesneuvelde content. Een mooi extraatje voor de kopers van het boek, want die krijgen tegen de oorspronkelijke prijs een boek dat 25% dikker is geworden.

Voor degenen die nog twijfelen of Snel aan de slag met Ubuntu iets voor hen is geeft dit e-book een goede indruk geeft van wat u van het boek mag verwachten.

Het hoofdstukje “Hoe maak ik een backup naar een clouddienst?” was oorspronkelijke geschreven als onderdeel van hoofdstuk 2 “Veilig aan de slag met Ubuntu” en het leert u hoe u Dropbox kunt gebruiken voor het veilig stellen van persoonlijke bestanden.
